The 2012 Columbia City Eagle baseball season is well underway and the boys are off to a fast start.  Following key wins against Central Noble, Wawassee, and cross-county rival Churubusco, the Eagles are off to a 5-1 start and looking to build on that momentum.  The Eagles are led by a strong senior class made up of Connor Slavich, Derek Lamle, Brandon Gay, Jacob Johnson, Austin Clark, and Connor Reed.  The boys begin their conference schedule next week against Bellmont and will face two tough challenges in Huntington North and Homestead.  The JV Boys have also found success with a 5-1 start as well.  The Eagles are coached by Zac Bireley and assistants Ryne Winger, Kenney Steele, Tom Rentschler, and Steve Shoda.
Experienced seniors have found early success this season on the mound and at the dish.  Senior Austin Clark leads the team with three wins, followed by Connor Slavich with a 2-1 record.  The Eagles have found offensive success as well, using a solid combination of power and “small ball.”  Defensively, the Eagles are led by senior catcher Derek Lamle who plans on continuing his career next year at Manchester College.  The coaching staff hopes to see improvements in all facets of the game and has high hopes in this team’s potential.  While it will be difficult to replace the six seniors next season, the coaching staff believes that the future is bright for Columbia City baseball.
